Activated Carbon
The Purchase Advantage inventories a full line of premium activated carbons made from high quality bituminous
coal, coconut shell and anthracite coal raw materials. Applications for activated carbon
include improving the taste and quality of drinking water, treating industrial wastewater,
purifying materials used in production processes, controlling air emissions, and filtering
contaminants out of groundwater in environmental cleanup sites.
Activated carbon is one of the most widely used medias for water treatement around the world. Activated carbon is used as a scavenging media to remove chlorine, trihalomethanes, pesticides, detergents and hydrocarbons. Chlorine is an oxidizing agent that is used widely as a disinfectant in drinking water and trihalomethanes are a biproduct of chlorine and chloramines. These chemicals negatively affect water taste and are therefore commonly removed in drinking water and by restaurants, bottling plants and food processing businesses.
Activated carbon has tremendous surface area on both the external surface as well as an internal network of pores which allow it to adsorb larger organics molecules.
