Ultraviolet Sterilizers & Accessories
UV radiation can be used as a pretreatment or polishing step to destroy bacteria and to
reduce total organics. Low pressure mercury discharge lamps are used to generate the UV
energy, emitted at either 254 or 185 nm. The UV energy emitted at 254 nm is used as a
non-chemical method for destroying microorganisms by altering the genetic material, and
rendering them unable to reproduce. The shorter, and therefore more powerful 185 nm
energy is used for the effective reduction of organics, commonly referred to as TOC (total
oxidizable carbon).
